چکیده

The availability of Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data opens the possibility to characterize urban areas by means of this sensor all over the world. In particular, the global digital elevation model (DEM) can provide a three-dimensional atlas of urban agglomerates. However, the coarse ground resolution and the problems due to radar imaging of the complex urban environments do not allow a precise characterization of urban features. This work is aimed to a first assessment of building detection in urban areas using SRTM DEMs. We considered data over Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, and showed that, despite the above mentioned problems, it is still possible to detect tall structures and identify the major buildings in the area. Due to the coarseness of the data, classical algorithms for building detection and recognition are not immediately useful, but a comparison with a ground survey for the Wilshire Corridor in Los Angeles provides a first evaluation of the usefulness of SRTM data for urban applications.

Global DEM Errors Underpredict Coastal Vulnerability to Sea Level Rise and Flooding

Elevation data based on NASA’s Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) have been widely used to evaluate threats from global sea level rise, storm surge, and coastal floods. However, SRTM data are known to include large vertical errors in densely urban or densely vegetated areas. The errors may propagate to derived land and population exposure assessments. We compare assessments based on SRTM d...

Landforms identification using neural network-self organizing map and SRTM data

During an 11 days mission in February 2000 the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) collected data over 80% of the Earth's land surface, for all areas between 60 degrees N and 56 degrees S latitude. Since SRTM data became available, many studies utilized them for application in topography and morphometric landscape analysis. Exploiting SRTM data for recognition and extraction of topographic ...

Applications of Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Elevation Data

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) was flown in February 2000 and collected the first ever high-resolution near-global digital elevation data. The final SRTM data have become widely available at 1 arc-second resolution for the United States and 3 arc-second resolution for other areas. This article reviews the background of the SRTM mission, the data quality characteristics of the SRTM ...

Accuracy Comparison of the Srtm, Aster, Ned, Nextmap® Usa Digital Terrain Model over Several Usa Study Sites

Accurate digital terrain models (DTMs) are necessary for a wide variety applications. National-scale mediumresolution elevation data have been acquired for the conterminous United States under the USGS National Elevation Data (NED; 10 m and 30 m), the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mapping (SRTM; 30 m), and the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER; 30 m) programs. Analsysis of Aster Gdem Elevation Models

Digital elevation models (DEM) are of fundamental importance for remote sensing. With a DEM the three-dimensional positioning, requiring a stereo model can be reduced to a two-dimensional solution just based on a single image. With the free of charge availability of the SRTM-height models, covering the land area from 56° southern up to 60.25° northern latitude a nearly world wide coverage is gi...
